AFE’s Stars of 2021: Asa Thomas (Bodedern Athletic)

NO LIST of local footballing stars would ever be complete without this man featured on it, no matter the season.

The 2019/20 season, cut short by the coronavirus pandemic, was one to remember for the prolific Asa Thomas as he surpassed the 500-goal mark.

Thomas hit 19 goals for Holyhead Town in Welsh Alliance Two before the club folded in December 2019, meaning that the goals he scored there became expunged. As a result, the first of two goals he scored in Holyhead Town Reserves (who then became Holyhead Town as there was no first team), in a thrilling 7-6 win at Bodorgan in the Anglesey League, proved to be his 500th career goal.

Over the years, the 30-year-old has become one of the greatest goalscorers around on the island and indeed in North Wales as a whole.

Thomas’ finest-ever season came way back in 2010/11, when at just 19 years old, he hit an incredible 112 goals (which included 25 hat-tricks) in just 47 appearances for Trearddur Bay United as the club won a quadruple – a goal-scoring feat that doesn’t look like being broken any time soon.

This season with Bodedern Athletic has been no different for Thomas in the goalscoring department as the club sits pretty at the top of the North Wales Coast West Premier having won all 14 of their league matches so far.

The striker has netted 34 goals in just 20 matches in all competitions. Between him and striker partner Marc Evans, who featured earlier on in the series, the pair have already scored 73 goals this season.

The goals have not stopped coming for the forward as he has hit 19 goals in 12 competitions in the league.

Thomas also proved his class when he bagged a brace as Boded narrowly lost out 5-4 to tier-two side Ruthin Town in the prestigious FAW Welsh Cup back in September.

As of October, he has passed the 550 goals mark for his career. Unreal.
