IN something a little different tonight, I thought I’d feature a Premier League and international footballer in this series (alongside his little brother!).
Since bursting onto the scene with Liverpool FC last season (and winning a Premier League winners medal in the process due to having made more than 5 appearances in the top-flight that season), Neco Williams has become a familiar name to many football fans.
The 19-year-old full back even has nine Wales caps (and one goal) to his name already, and yet, not many people know that he is actually from NORTH WALES!
Neco and younger brother Keelan grew up in Cefn Mawr – a village near Wrexham, with their parents Emma and Lee.
The former joined Liverpool’s academy when he was just six years old and, after a rapid rise through the ranks, made his Premier League debut for the club on June 24, 2020 – coming on the 74th minute in a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.
Neco then went on to make enough first team appearances with the Reds to secure a Premier League winners that season and, soon after, earned himself a contract extension with Juergen Klopp’s side.
The way in which he handled himself at the highest level of English football at such a young eye caught they eye of Ryan Giggs who handed him his Wales debut in a 1-0 UEFA Nations League over Finland in September 2020. In the same month, he would go on to score an important late winner in another 1-0 National League victory – this time over Bulgaria.
Neco is a supremely talented individual who’s quick, reliable and has a great delivery on him too. He’s certainly one to keep an eye on in years to come and we’re lucky to have him in our national teams set up!
His younger brother Keelan (below) is 17 years old and is also a full back.
He currently plays for Burnley’s under 18’s side and, like Neco, was also part of the Liverpool FC Academy previously.
Keelan also represents the Wales under 18’s side and signed a two-year apprenticeship with the Clarets in July 2020.
He’s said to be making great strides for Burnley’s under 18’s already according to several media outlets and looks like he could follow in his brother’s footsteps by playing in the Premier League in years to come.
