LLANGEFNI Town Reserves manager Gafyn Buckland has announced that he is stepping down as manager of the club.
Just last season, the 35-year-old led the club to the Lock Stock Fireworks Challenge Cup final, where they would have played Bangor City Reserves had it not been for the Coronavirus pandemic ending the campaign so abruptly.
During his time as manager of the Reserves, he has helped more than 30 players make the step up to Llangefni’s first team who play in the JD Cymru North (tier two) and are led by Chris Roberts.
Gafyn, whose father John also managed the Reserves in the past, played for the likes of Llangefni Town and Gwalchmai in his playing days – mainly as a midfielder, but often playing in other positions such as full-back.
A statement Buckland posted to Twitter earlier today confirming his departure from the club read: “After six seasons in charge of Llangefni Reserves, I feel that now is the time for a new challenge. I’m ready to take the next step as a coach and I’m looking for a role that will lead me to being accepted as an applicant on the UEFA A licence course.
“I’d like to thank those who have helped me over the years, the committee, the supporters, the coaches and most importantly all the players who have represented the club since I’ve been manager. There has been a lot of ups and downs and I’ve learnt a lot, it’s been a great experience. Therefore, I’d like to thank Llangefni for giving me the chance to start my coaching career with the club I’ve represented since I was eight years old.
“I want to wish the very best to Chris Roberts and everyone else in the club for next season and I look forward to returning to Lôn Talwrn as a supporter.
“What next? Well, nothing unfortunately because of Covid. But once local football gets going again, I’ll be itching to get back into management. At 35, I haven’t ruled out playing again until the right coaching opportunity comes along as I’ve been keeping myself fit over lockdown. So if any clubs are looking for a slow, bald utility player, I’m your man!”
