TONIGHT on the latest series I’m taking a look at a family with the best last name in the world (in my biased opinion!) and one that is packed full of talent.
I’ll start with the father – Medwyn who was a brilliant footballer in his playing days, although his promising career was unfortunately cut short early.
The 56-year-old was a talented and skilful midfielder who represented Wales as a schoolboy.
He grew up in Brynteg, the small village in the outskirts of Benllech, which I myself grew up in, and was in fact very good friends with my father (Alun).
After leaving school, he went on to spend a few years as an apprentice with Wrexham AFC and eventually secured a pro contract there. Unfortunately though, that dream lasted just one season as he sustained a career-ending injury in 1984, having played for the first team in English Football League Division Four.
Later on in life, Medwyn (above) represented the likes of Bangor City, Bethesda Athletic and Llanerchymedd, who he also became assistant manager for.
Modern day local football fans will most likely know Medwyn’s son Deion who is himself a very talented player.
A former Tranmere Rovers and Shrewsbury Town player, he was in the same school year as me at Ysgol Syr Thomas Jones school in Amlwch.
The 25-year-old midfielder/attacker will be a familiar face to many as a hard-working and reliable player for the likes of Llanerchymedd, Bodedern Athletic and Gwalchmai over the years.
The former Wales youth player (below) has recently re-signed for Medd who he will play for in the new-look North Wales Coast West Division One when football resumes.
Deion’s brother – the late Chris Evans who tragically died aged 27 in 2015 – was also a fantastically talented footballer and, like his father, became an apprentice with Wrexham.
The midfielder (below) also gained Welsh Premier League experience with Porthmadog, Llangefni Town and Newtown.
On Anglesey, he turned out for the likes of Glantraeth, Llanfairpwll, Bodedern Athletic and Llanerchymedd and was a very well-liked and now much-missed figure on the local footballing scene.
Medwyn’s other son Tom, also a gifted player, has, I believe, appeared on the Anglesey footballing scene with Llan and other clubs in the past.
As well as this, his nephew, 22-year-old Ryan Wood, is another top footballer in the family who has impressed for Pentraeth during recent seasons and is now captain of Justin Gallagher’s Gaerwen side who will play tier four football in future.
He was also once on the books of Llandudno Football Club.
As footballing families go this is one of the most talented around – having all played to a very good standard.
