AFE’s Stars of the 2019/20 Season: John Danby (Flint Town United)

ONE of the best shot-stoppers in the JD Cymru North last season, Danby has just this week announced he is stepping down as Flint Town United’s number one.

The Silkmen were promoted to the JD Cymru Premier League at the end of the 2019/20 campaign, having finished as runners-up in tier two.

Danby, who joined Flint in 2019, was a real key figure in that success for Niall McGuinness’ men and was included in the JD Cymru North 2019/20 Team of the Season selected by the league’s managers for his efforts.

Having previously represented the likes of Chester City and Chester, Danby is best known in Wales for the time he spent at Connah’s Quay Nomads between 2015 and 2019. It was there that he made a real name for himself in Wales’ top-flight, going on to make more than a century of league appearances for the club.

The 37-year-old starred in 11 of Flint’s 16 matches since their return to the top-flight this season, before the coronavirus pandemic halted the campaign. He has also been Man of the Match twice during the 20/21 season.

But, just yesterday, he announced he would be stepping down as Flint’s number one, citing “work and family commitments” as his reason for doing so.

Danby added that, whilst the rigours of competing at the highest level in Welsh football were too demanding of his time, he was not quite ready to retire completely, and hoped to carry on playing at some level.

AFE wishes him all the best with the next chapter of his career!
