North Wales footballing families: The Jones brothers

THREE brothers who have been a big part of both Bro Goronwy and Pentraeth Football Clubs over the years.

The duo of Connor and Taylor Jones have been involved in Anglesey football for a number of seasons now and older brother Ashley was also a brilliant player in his playing days.

The trio, from Benllech (pictured celebrating a goal for Pentraeth below), will be well-known to many involved in local football I’m sure.

Youngest brother Connor (below), who is 24, has scored 37 goals in 115 matches for Bro during his time there (if the stats on the club’s website are to be believed, which they should be knowing the ever-reliable Paul Scholes!). Connor’s finest season came in the club’s 2017/18 campaign, when he netted 12 times in 31 Gwynedd League appearances.

He’s a composed figure in front of goal and always a threat when going forward.

Taylor, 26 years old, is a player who can play in a number of positions – slotting in at centre back for Pentraeth in Welsh Alliance Two last season, after switching from Bro midway through the season.

Whilst with Moelfre-based Bro, where he was predominantly a midfielder, he had a record of 52 goals in 154 matches.

Taylor (below) twice hit 20 goals in a season for the club and in 2018/19, he scored in the 3-1 NWCFA Junior Cup final win over Bryngwran (now Trearddur Bay) Bulls as Bro won the prestigious cup for a third time in their history.

He’s a real technically gifted player who has so many great qualities to bring to any team he plays for.

Eldest brother Ashley was most recently a star player for Pentraeth before retiring from the game some years ago. It was there he won club’s player and committees player of the season at the end of the 2013/14 campaign.

The reliable defender/midfielder (below) played a big role in the Pentraeth side which won the Anglesey League title in 2012/13. They lost just two games that season and also conceded the fewest amount of goals in the division.

A trio of talented brothers who certainly deserve some recognition for their efforts in local football over the years.

Their step-brother Graham Jones has also been a fantastic servant to Bro previously and played for Pentraeth Reserves in the Anglesey League last season. His brother Leon has also played for that club under Paul Matier and Danny Jones in the past and both played alongside each other for Treetops at Sunday League level once upon a time.
