AS IT IS his 58th birthday today, I think it’s only right that I pay a little tribute to the footballing grandfather of the Anglesey League – and also to his grandson who joined him at the same club last season.
The evergreen Stephen Edwards (below) is a centre half who has been a fantastic servant for Arriva Bangor over the years.
He has been ever-present at the back for them since they joined the Anglesey League in 2017/18, and was part of the side which won a cup double that year, before winning the Car Boot Trophy again the season after that.
He may almost be old enough to claim a free bud pass, but for The Busmen Edwards has been a real example to many players half his age in tier five.
Over the years, the tough-tackling defender has also played for Bangor-based Hirael FC, as well as Menai Tigers, Bethesda Athletic and Y Felinheli.
Last season was a particularly memorable one for Edwards and for the Anglesey League in general as history was made when his grandson Jake Hughes (below) joined him on the pitch as centre back/right back for Arriva.
The 17-year-old was a great addition to Kevin Jones’ side and showed great confidence as he produced performances that were beyond his youthful years.
There may be 41 years between the two of them, but their passion for the game is equal and they’re both fantastic assets to Arriva in their own right.
Happy birthday Steve, keep proving that age is just a number for those who have the desire to carry on in the game!
