MENAI TIGERS have wrapped up the Gwynedd League title with a game to spare after beating Glantraeth 4-0 last night.
After what has been a stop-start month for the club in April (which included losing a cup final and being handed their first league defeat of the season), The Tigers have bounced back in style, putting in a great shift in the second half to claim the championship.
Kevin Roberts fired them into the lead early on in the second 45 before top scorer Dean Redmond made it 2-0 just after the hour mark. The prolific forward sealed the deal for The Tigers with a second strike on 78 minutes before Callum Hughes netted five minutes from time to ensure the title was going back to Porthaethwy. Man of the Match on the club’s title-winning night was Kelvin Frazer.
Their final match v Gwalchmai, who could have had a chance of winning the league if The Tigers had not won this one, is now null and void as they hold a four point lead over their rivals.
Despite losing to Nefyn in the Bo Parry Memorial Shield in April, the dominant Tigers could yet still go onto make it a treble this season. They are still in with a shout in the Safeflue Shield (where they will face Glantraeth or Llanystumdwy) and will also face Bro Goronwy in the Meditel Cup final in Bethesda this coming Saturday.
Speaking on his side’s title win, Tigers manager Sean Brett (below) said: “It’s been a fantastic season so far. We knew early on we had a great chance to win the league this season and we were everyone’s favourites after the first few games which added pressure but to get over the line with a game to spare is a fantastic feeling and a great reward for all the hard work we’ve put in over the course of season.
“The players have been an amazing group to manage this year, especially with it being an almost entirely new squad and they have been fully committed and bought in to how we wanted to do things.
“We had a couple of poor results in the last month which could have affected a weaker group but the character of the side shone through and now we can finally say we are the league champions. We still have ambitions this season with two cup finals to come, and then, the planning will start for a new season in the Welsh alliance.”
