ANGLESEY LEAGUE: Three horse race for the title is well and truly on

PICTURE by Wynne Evans shows Caergybi (Black and white) taking on Bryngwran Bulls earlier on in the season.

AT THE END of last season, I was convinced that no other Anglesey League campaign could have ever ended in a more dramatic fashion. However, it seems that I could yet be wrong.

In May 2018, Bryngwran Bulls needed just the one point to secure the title against second placed Mynydd Tigers. It seemed like the easiest of challenges for The Bulls, who had already beaten their opponents in two Cup finals in the previous months.

However, as football so often tends to, a dramatic end to the season ensued and it was Mynydd who were crowned the eventual champions with a fantastic 4-2 victory in the final showdown.

This time, we have not two, but THREE teams all still in contention for the AL title with just three matches remaining for each of them. Arriva Bangor (41pts), Bryngwran Bulls (40pts) and Caergybi (39pts) are set to battle it out in what is surely the tightest title contest there has been in a very long time.

The three have been leapfrogging each other into pole position all season long and it’s no surprise to see the league’s three top scorers also plying their trade for the three clubs; James Ryan (Caergybi – 66 goals), Scott Hughes (Arriva Bangor – 54) and Craig Moore (Bryngwran Bulls – 50) – All pictured below.

Truth be told, it’s almost impossible to predict the outcome, but here are remaining Anglesey League fixtures for the top three are as follows:

ARRIVA BANGOR
Cefni (A) – April 10 (Prediction = Arriva win)
Caergybi (A) – April 13 (Prediction = Caergybi win)
Bryngwran Bulls (H) – April 30 (Prediction = Bulls win)
44pts

BRYNGWRAN BULLS
Llandegfan (H) – April 10 (Prediction = Bulls win)
Cefni (A) – April 16 (Prediction = Bulls win)
Arriva Bangor (A) – April 30 (Prediction = Bulls win)
49pts

CAERGYBI
Valley (H) – April 6 (Prediction = Caergybi win)
Arriva Bangor (H) – April 13 (Prediction = Caergybi win)
Hotspur Res (H) – April 27 (Prediction = draw)
46pts

Table heading into final showdown on April 30 would be – Caergybi (46pts), Bryngwran Bulls (46pts) and Arriva Bangor (44pts)

As you can see, they still have each other left to play too so it could make things very, very interesting indeed. If Arriva win all their matches, they will be champions, but any slip ups and Bryngwran/Caergybi can capitalise on that.

Personally, I expect Bryngwran to go on and win the league, but it certainly won’t be easy. their game v winless Llandegfan should be a walkover, but Cefni will certainly make things tough for them. I’m fully expecting it to come down to that final showdown at Bangor City’s 3G pitch once again.

It’s been a phenomenal season for the Anglesey League once more and I think the standard of the league now is higher than it has been for a very long time, which has only been proved further by this thrilling three horse race which is set to be decided next month.

So, who do you think is going to win the league? Will it come down to April 30? Time will tell and I for one can’t wait to see it all unfold!
