Player focus: Caergybi’s top five stars of the season

IN THE third part of the player focus series for the Kon-X Anglesey League side, Arron Evans takes a look at division newcomers – Caergybi FC.

Dale Moffat’s side have been a great team to watch at times this season and rightfully deserve to finish in that top four. They are still in with a chance of winning the Car Boot Trophy (v Arriva Bangor in final) and Megan Cup (against Bryngwran Bulls) too.

Promotion could still be on the cards for Cybi too as if Bryngwran Bulls win the league and decide not to take the chance to move up to the Gwynedd League and Cybi finish second they could go up in their place.

So, without further ado, here are my top five Caergybi stars of the 2017/18 Kon-X Anglesey League campaign ….

Glenn North

Usually deployed out wide, North has been a vital player to Dale Moffat’s side this season, especially when Gary Jo Owen was out of action for a couple of weeks.

He scored the quickest goal of the season (and possibly in Anglesey League history) when he netted a goal after just SEVEN seconds in Cybi’s 14-1 demolition of Llandegfan in the Car Boot Trophy this week.

He’s bagged 14 goals to date this season and has been quietly brilliant at times for his side.

Kurt Harris

Again, he may not be the main man at Millbank, but Harris has certainly made his contribution known at Caergybi this year.

The attacker poses a real threat when his side are on the break and he’s used his pace and movement well to catch defenders out at times this season.

Harris has scored 13 goals for Caergybi this season and is without a doubt a valued member of that squad.

Liam Williams

The most creative player in the division this year, Williams has contributed a jaw-dropping 72 assists so far (for Valley and Caergybi).

His vision is second to none and so it’s no surprise to see that manager Moffat is using him in an attacking midfield role, which allows him to pull the strings well and set his team mates up regularly. He also has nine goals of his own this season though.

Williams has all the makings of a player who belongs in a higher division with his passing and unselfish style of play. Can he help push Caergybi towards a top two finish this year?

Dewi Thomas

Club captain and the man who has led Dale Moffat’s side from the middle of the park quite brilliantly at times.

Thomas has been one of the standout midfielders in the Anglesey League this season and has contributed 13 goals of his own towards Caergybi’s progression.

I have no doubts that he’ll be looking to guide his team to a bit of silverware before the campaign ends.

Gary Jo Owen

Striker Owen is without a doubt Caergybi’s most important player and the one they can turn to when they need an important result.

His incredible run of 18 goals in his past three matches has seen him take his tally for the season to 51 goals (for Valley/Caergybi) and he looks as though he’s destined to lift that Top Scorer award come the end of the season (Although James Ryan might run him close!).

He’s no stranger to that award either – having previously scooped it whilst playing for Morawelon FC.

Owen’s contribution in goals will continue to be highly important to Caergybi as the season comes to a close and they look to shock the critics by winning the league.

NOTE: These are my personal top five, but I have to also add that the likes of goalkeeper Kieran Weeks, defender Colm Foley and attackers Luke McKittrick, Ashley Beck and Elliot Patterson all deserve a mention too as they’ve been vital at times.

Caergybi’s progression as a team in recent weeks has been simply incredible and I think if they remain in the Anglesey League next season then they’ll certainly be the favourites to win the division (providing they keep the same team together).
