WITH the Dargie Cup first round matches done and dusted last weekend, it was time for another Anglesey League based competition to kick off this Saturday, the Bwlch Car Boot Trophy.
The Group-staged competition saw six sides take to the field this weekend and here’s how each match panned out …
GROUP A
Llandegfan 0-11 Bryngwran Bulls
The Bulls fired themselves to the top of Group A with an emphatic win away at Llandegfan.
Despite having turned up with only 12 men available and a stand-in goalkeeper between the sticks, the Bulls had no problem coming away victory in this one against a Llandegfan side who know they should have given it more of a go.
Stand-in captain Dale Jones headed the visitors in front on 9 minutes from a corner kick. Henry Caldecott added the second just moments later from another corner.
On 20 minutes, it was 3-0 and Llandegfan were really struggling to contain the Bulls’ set-piece play’s as another corner whipped in by Calum Lawton saw James Ryan score. A free kick just seconds later from Tony Meyer saw Ryan Hughes of Llandegfan turn the ball into his own net for 4-0.
Bulls eventually made it 5-0 before half time as Tony Meyer grabbed his first of the match.
Any chance of a better second half performance from the home side was shattered when, on 50 minutes, the Bulls added a sixth when Matty Roberts fired in a great shot from 20 yards.
James Ryan made it two for the day and seven for the Bulls moments later, before Tony Meyer made it eight on 65 mins and Ryan completed his hat-trick on 68 mins thanks to great work down the left by John Earnshaw.
It was four for the prolific Ryan and 10 for the Bulls on 83 mins before Dale Jones completed the hammering with a thunderous effort from thirty yards that flew into the top corner.
Bryngwran Bulls were ruthless in the attacking sense on the day, but it has to be said that Llandegfan goalkeeper Hywel “The Monk” Hughes deserves credit for keeping the score line down too, having made some fine saves throughout the ninety minutes.
Player-manager Jordan Love suffered a knee injury before half time but continued playing until the end to try and rally his troops.
Llandegfan know that they should have come out with more fighting spirit, but credit to the Bulls who go marching to the top of the group after a fine, solid display.
Mynydd Tigers 2-3 Arriva Bangor
Arriva Bangor managed to pull off what was easily the shock result of the weekend, picking up a victory against Kon-X Anglesey League leaders Mynydd Tigers.
Arriva made it two successive cups win in this one as they followed up their 2-0 Dargie Cup win over Pentraeth Reserves last week with this impressive result.
The match was one that was a much more closely-contested one that many would have predicted prior to it and Arriva, who are yet to win in the Anglesey League, simply wanted it more at the end of the day.
Goals from Kieran Davies, Scott Hughes and Kieran Munson, who has made it two goals in two matches since leaving Llandegfan to join Arriva, were enough to give the visitors a vital win.
Herbie Hofsteede, who has had a fine season to date, and Adam Davies scored for Mynydd Tigers, but it was not enough to keep them in the game as they suffered a disappointing loss.
Arriva Manager Kevin Jones can be proud of the way that his team set out to play and they must now surely be looking forward to their league match against Llandegfan on Friday night, which could be a thriller.
They’ll be looking to earn their first three points of the campaign and if they play like they did in this one, then they could certainly do so.
GROUP B
Bodorgan 1-4 Caergybi
Caergybi travelled to Cae Cob in Malltraeth to play Bodorgan and came away with the victory.
Bodorgan yielded 10 goals at the hands of Bryngwran Bulls last weekend and it took the away side just over 20 minutes to break them down this time around as Konner Druce headed home to score the first goal of the game.
With 35 minutes gone, Bodorgan drew level after a penalty was awardedand Luke Allaway converted.
1-1 at the break and this tie could have gone either way at this point, as Caergybi wasted their chances.
In the second half however, they woke up again and the deadlock was broken by an outstanding strike by defender Colm Foley who worked his way into the Bodorgan half about 40 yards from goal and struck a sweet volley into the top left-hand corner of the goal.
Caergybi manager Dale Moffat decided to make some changes after that, bringing new signing Glenn North and Dafydd Edwards on to replace Ashley Beck and Kieran Murphy.
On the hour mark, a long throw in from Scott Pettersen was met with another Konner Druce header to give Caergybi a two goal lead and make it 3-1. Scott Pettersen was at it again with the long throws not long after the third goal went in and a fourth was headed into goal by Glenn North on his debut for the club.
The match was closely contested contest and a fair and clean one too, with only one yellow card being shown.
Caergybi had control for most of the game thanks to man of the match Dewi Thomas, Mike Murphy and Luke McKittrick keeping the ball well in midfield. Bodorgan were dangerous at times on the break and have shown signs of improvement in recent matches.
** Pentraeth Reserves, Valley Athletic and Llangoed & District Reserves did not play this weekend.
Kon-X Anglesey League action returns this coming weekend, starting on Friday night with the 7pm kick off between Arriva Bangor and Llandegfan FC, two teams who are currently near the bottom of the table.
On Saturday afternoon, Bodorgan take on Bryngwran Bulls and Llangoed & Dist. Reserves take on Pentraeth Reserves.
